HISTORY OF CHRISTIAN CHURCH IN WEST JAVA (GKP)

1851
Genootschap voor Inen Uitwendige Zending te Batavia (GIUZ), a Dutch-based evangelical institution was establised in Batavia (Jakarta). This institution was in association with Zendeling Werkman in the Netherlands. The founding fathers of GIUZ were among others: Mr. F.L. Anthing and Rev. E.W. Kin. The former was believed to be the first westerner who evangelised West Java. His mission was known as "evangelism by indigenous evangelists." Meaning that it was the local christians who took the responsibility of spreading the Good News in their own native localities. In the following years, Mr. F.L. Anthing managed to establish local chapters which were later known as "Anthing's Congregations" namely Kampung Sawah Congregation, Pondok Melati Congregation, Gunung Putri Congregation, Cigelam Congregation, Cikuya (Banten) Congregation, Tanah Tinggi Congregation, Cakung Congregation and Ciater Congregation.

1854
Aolf Muhinickel was sent to GIUZ in Batavia by the Zendeling Werkman. From that year to 1859, he was working with Cikuya Congregation in Banten as a private school teacher and he was allowed to evangelise to the natives.

July 11, 1855
Two natives from Cikuya named Minggu and Sarma accepted Holy Sacrament by Rev. Bierhans in Batavia. It was conducted in Batavia since Muhinickel was not authorised to conduct such service. (Later, GKP commemorate July 11 as "GKP Evangelism Day")

May 7, 1856
Eigh more natives in Cikuya-Banten accepted Baptist Sacraments.

1862
Nederlandsche Zendelings Vereeniging (NZV) commenced sending their 'zendelings' to West Java. NZV was founded in Rotterdam on December 2, 1858 by Hervormd Church Congregation.

January 5, 1863
The First NZV Zendeling Mission led by C.J. Albers, D.J.v.d. Linden and G.J. Grashuis arrived in Batavia in March 1863, but they had to wait for two years before obtaining their working permit from the Dutch Colonial Governor General.

1863
Failing to obtain his working permit, D.J.v.d Linden moved to Cirebon while Albers moved to Cianjur and started their works in those areas. Rev. E.W. King established Rehoboth Congregation in Jatinegara, Batavia.

December 26, 1863
A native couple, Ismail and Murti were baptised in Cianjur.

1864
Zendeling A. Dijkstra started his service in Cirebon.

1868
Two natives and a chinese-origin family in Cirebon were baptised by Dijkstra. That same year, S. Coolma evangelised in Bogor. Until 1883, four natives and two chinese were registered as christian in Bogor.

1870
A. Geedink began evangelism in Bandung. Until 1877, 25 christians were registered in Bandung.

1872
P.N. Gijsman began evangelism in Sukabumi. Until 1883, 25 christians were registered in Sukabumi.

1876
J. Verhoeven began evangelism in Majalengka and surrounding areas.

1878
Depok Theological Seminary (a would-be STT Jakarta) was established. NZV Zendelings used this seminary to prepare the natives for their own evangelistical works.

1879
First Publication New Testament in Sundanese Language.

1882
Two native women in Majalengka were baptised. Verhoeven moved to Cideres, near Majalengka.

1883
Seven natives in Cideres received baptism.

1885
Cikuya Congregation and other "Anthing's Congregations" were included into NZV Service. From then on, evangelism in West Java were conducted by NZV with aides from local evangelists.

1886
S.Van Eendenburgh founded Desa Kristen Pangharapan ("christian village of hope") in Cikembar Sukabumi. This happened because during that time, christians in the area were socially marginalised and excluded by surrounding communities. In later days, J. Verhoeven founded Palalong christian village in Ciranjang Cianjur (1902), and A. Vermeer founded Tamiyang christian village in Cirebon area.

1891
A Complete Sundanese Bible edition, a work by S. Coolsma, was published. He was assigned to complete the work by the Netherlands Bible Society, and was assisted by a number of native evangelists.

1899
NZV Service in West Java covered 11 christian chapters with a total number of 677 members.

1908
In West Java, 26 schools were founded by or in association with NZV Service with a total number of 1,700 students. Since the begining of its service, school establishments were part of NZV activities in West Java.

1910
Immanuel Hospital was founded in Bandung. Later on, other hospitals were also established in Cibadak and Purwakarta. NZV missionaries had been alwaysmoved to additionally provide medical services for the people of West Java.

1915
24 christian congregations were served by NZV in West Java with a total of 2,956 church members.

1917
GKP Church's By-Laws was put into effect during NZV Zendelings Conference.

1918
Rev. Titus was ordained by NZV as NZV's first native priest. He was formerly a native evangelist.

1932
5,497 christians (native and chinese-origin) were registered.

1933
Dr. H. Kraemer, sent by Netherlands Bible Society, after extensive visit to West Java, recommended that the congregations in West Java be united as one mother church independent from NZV.

November 14, 1934
Christian Church in West Java or GKP (Gereja Kristen Pasundan) became an independent church. Dr. N.A.C. Slotemaker de Bruine, on behalf of NZV in Netherlands read the Charter and appointed the RAD AGENG (General Assembly) as the highest body of churches in West Java.

1934
As becoming independent, the Christian Church in West Java (Christelijke kerk van West Java), it was named "Gereja Kristen Pasundan" or "GKP". A number of native evangelists were ordained as GKP's priests.

1936
GKP was registered as a legal body.

1938
A Chinese Church Kie Tok Kauw Hwee (now West Java GKI Church) was established, firstly in Cirebon. The church members were a mix congregation of chinese, sundanese and other ethnics and many of them still retained their GKP membership while having their own independent church.

1942
GKP leadership was fully in the hands of the natives sundanese, due to the Japanese Occupation which had made it impossible for the Dutch missionaries to complete their works. During this occupation period, NZV handed over to GKP all the service works and their assets including schools and hospitals.

1945-1949
Chaotic period during revolution wars and fight for independence of the new Republic of Indonesia. Intimidation, terror against christians was rampant and many church members, especially in Cigelam, Gunung Putri and Kampung Sawah took refuge to much safer areas. J.v.d. Weg who had been just released from prisoners camp, was about to return to his job in Juntikebon when a unidentified mob violently murdered him on his arrival.

1946-1947
GKP emergency caretakers was forcely moved to Garut during heavy battles between Republic of Indonesia's independence fighters and Dutch's Troops in Bandung causing massive exodus of people from Bandung.

May 1946
GKP took part in the establishment of Consultative of Churches in Java, held in Jogjakarta.

1950
General Assembly VIII of Rad Ageng in Bandung agreed to change "RAD AGENG GKP" into "SINODE GKP"as the highest leadership council of GKP.

In that year, GKP actively participated in the establishment of Indonesian Council of Church (DGI) which later known as PGI.

1951
NZV was integrated into Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk (NHK).

During that year, Darul Islam separatist movement intimidated and terorised many GKP congregations. Tamiyang congregation was attacked and prosecuted most heavily when they executed Rev. Usman Sarin to death.

1953
GKP assests (church buildings, hospitals, school buildings) during service works in West Java were transferred to GKP and West Java GKI.

1956
On its tenth assembly, GKP By-Laws was effected in place of 1934 By-Laws.

1959
GKP enter membership of East Asian Christian Conference, which later known as Christian Conference of Asia.

GKP grew 32 congregations with 9,127 church members.

1961
GKP became a member of World Council of Churches

1967
GKP began co-operation with Presbyterian Church of New Zealand.

1968
GKP began co-operation with Basel Mission, Switzerland.

1970
GKP became a member of World Alliance of Reformed Churches

1990
GKP grew 45 congregations and 35 chapters in West Java and Jakarta

1999
GKP committed its service to "decades towards the independence of churches."

2002
GKP grew 50 congregations, 30 chapters in West Java, Banten and Jakarta.
